Fortnite is currently one of the most famous and most played games in the world out there and why not? The game is very interesting to play. It also supports a lot of platforms like the PC, PlayStation4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and even the iPhone.
The game brings Battle Royale and more game modes to people and you don’t have to buy the game. It is a free game from Epic Games who are also known for games like Unreal Tournament and more. The company also develops Unreal Engine which is used in so many games out there.
As mentioned, Fortnite supports a lot of platforms but which platform runs it in the best possible way? We will know in this comparison. The game also supports cross-platform play so you can play it on a PC with a friend who might be playing on a PS4.
Let us start with the comparison and see what differences we see when we run on different platforms. This is a battle between Fortnite on PS4 vs Xbox One vs PC vs Nintendo Switch vs iPhone.
Fortnite on PC
The PC version of Fornite brings a lot of options in the settings. You can even tweak the graphics option to make sure that Fortnite runs better even on a low-end PC. Fortnite reaches its full potential in terms of graphics and functionality on a PC since you have more powerful hardware here.
If you go ahead and check the minimum system requirements to run Fortnite on PC, you will find that it can even run on a low-end machine with Intel HD 4000 graphics processor. Other minimum requirements include an Intel Core i3 clocked at 2.4GHz and 4GB RAM. This doesn’t mean that the game won’t run on AMD systems.
I get well over 120 fps on Fortnite with everything the graphics section set to high or epic in the settings. My PC is loaded with a Ryzen 5 1600x CPU along with 16GB 3200MHz RAM and for graphics processing, I am using an NVIDIA GTX 1070.
The game provides a lot of graphics options on the PC that you can use as per your system to get a good amount of frames per seconds. Disabling the Shadows on Fortnite brings a performance boost that helps low-end hardware.
Also, since you are playing Fortnite on PC, and you have to aim and strafe quickly, you can use your keyboard and mouse for better control. Having a keyboard and mouse will give you more power on how you control your character.
You can set the mouse sensitivity as per your liking and reassign different keys on the keyboard in order to build and strafe quickly in-game.
About the gameplay, things are exactly the same as they will be on any other platform.
Fortnite on PlayStation 4
Fortnite on PlayStation 4 brings cross-platform support so you can play with your friends on PC or an Xbox if you like.
The game is controlled using your DualShock controller. While a controller doesn’t bring the most accurate way to aim or strafe, Fortnite still works like a charm on the PS4. Everything works the same way but yes, you do have different settings for the game.
The graphics settings on Fortnite for PS4 don’t give you a lot of options. You can setup brightness, color correction and a few more small settings. The PS4 has limited options to provide. Also, if you are using a controller to play Fortnite on PS4, you can setup sensitivity that you like for your controller switches.
Since you are using a controller and aiming with a controller can be a bit tough and cumbersome, you also have settings to enable aim assist. This does not exist on the PC version of Fortnite and aiming is totally your skill since you have the ability to use a mouse instead of a controller.
The game on PS4 will run at around 60fps constant and Epic Games hasn’t locked the frame rate which is a good thing. The game performs well even on the stock original PS4 so people with the older PS4 will be able to run the game smoothly.
Fortnite on Xbox One
If you have an Xbox One X, you will be able to play Fortnite on your Xbox One X at 4K 60fps which is so much fun to play on. You get so much detail due to the 4K resolution and the game runs buttery smooth at 60fps.
Fortnite can easily take advantage of the 6 teraflops GPU that Xbox One X has to offer and the game utilizes it well. Even on an Xbox One S, the game is able to shell out 1080p at around 60fps but since it is 1080p and the GPU is better on the Xbox One X, you won’t be seeing the level of detail that you might have seen on the One X.
But that doesn’t mean you get bad graphics. The game still looks good and works great when you play it. But yes, just like the PS4, you don’t have a lot of options in the settings to tweak your graphics.
Fortnite on iPhone
We will be taking a look at Fortnite’s performance on iPhone SE and the iPhone X. The iPhone SE has older hardware the phone is similar to what you have on an iPhone 6S.
On the iPhone SE, the game runs good but the resolution isn’t that good. Everything looks a bit small due to the size of the screen and the game runs on a lower graphics quality. You will see that these graphical nerfs have been made on the game so that it can run well even on the older iPhones.
Coming to the iPhone X, the game runs much better than what you saw on the iPhone SE. The iPhone X has superior hardware and the game runs at around 900p or even 1080p (no official numbers) on the iPhone X. The graphics are also better and the level of detail is good. Fortnite can run on any iOS device from the following list.
- iPhone SE
- iPhone 6S
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 8
- iPhone X
- iPad Mini 4
- iPad Air 2 and later
- all versions of the iPad Pro.
Fortnite on Nintendo Switch
Fortnite is also supported on Nintendo Switch and of course, it runs better than how it runs on an iPhone. You can use the Joy-Con controllers that come with Switch. But there’s an issue if you plan to play Fortnite on your PS4 and Nintendo Switch both.
If you have a PS4 and you logged in to your Epic Games account of your PS4, you won’t be able to play Fortnite on your Nintendo Switch. This is a very dumb issue and this is caused due to the cross-play functionality on the PS4.
But talking about the performance on Nintendo Switch, the game runs pretty smooth at a resolution of 900p but the game is locked at 30fps. This might be an issue since other people who are playing on other platforms are getting better FPS and you are getting half of that.
Setting all the issues aside, the game is smooth and playing with the Joy-Cons is fun. There aren’t many performance differences even if you play Fortnite on your Switch in the docked mode. Yes, you will get better graphics but the improvements aren’t that significant.
It’s amazing that Epic Games have made Fortnite available on so many different platforms. But yes the experience varies from platform to platform. You get the best Fortnite playing experience on a PC without any doubt but for people with an Xbox One or a PS4, the game will work fine and run smooth. You will get around 60fps on both of these consoles which is a good amount of FPS to play with.
Things do get interesting on the iPhone and Nintendo Switch. You need to have an iPhone SE or another iPhone launched after that to be able to run Fortnite. It can even run on an iPad and if you have any of the devices from the list mentioned above, you will be able to run Fortnite without issues.
On Nintendo Switch you are locked at 30fps at 900p but it is good enough to run the game with enough level of graphical details.
